If you are new to the stair lift market, there are some terms and phrases that may puzzle you. Below is a list of terms that will help you better understand stair lifts.
A
- AC Alternating Current, type of power supplied to homes.
- Armrest padded cushion on the sit down stair lift to rest your arms on. The toggle control is also located on either the left or right armrest.
B
- Bridging Platform, Manual a platform that can be installed where there are only a few steps in the bend to negotiate. The platform is counter-balanced so that it can be lowered or raised easily by hand.
- Bridging Platform, Automatic a platform that can be installed where there are only a few steps in the bend to negotiate. The platform automatically lowers and rises in harmony with the stair lifts operation.
- Barrier Arm a standard safety barrier on the MediTek Stand and Perth Stair Lift.

- Cast Steel Gearbox self-sustaining, self-locking box with heavy-duty bronze gearwheels in the MediTek Stair Lift that holds the stair lift firmly in place wherever it is positioned on the drive track.
- Collision Damage Protection (CDP) a feature in the MediTek Stair Lift that prevents the stair lift from running into any obstructions on the stairs. Part of the "Total Surface Protection".
- Constant Pressure Safety System (CPSS) the MediTek stair lift will stop moving if the covers sense an obstruction. The stair lift can still travel in the opposite direction to allow the obstruction to be removed. See "Total Surface Protection".

- DC Direct Current, power supplied by batteries
- Drive Technology the mechanics of the stair lift that make it move

- Fail-Safe technology that cannot break and will always work
- Footrest a platform attached to the stair lift so that you may rest your feet while riding. The MediTek Stair Lift has a foldable footrest so that your stairs can be used by others as well.
- Folding Hinge Track, Manual if the stair lift rail could cause an obstruction at the foot of the stairs, the final section of the track may be hinged so that it can be lifted vertically by hand. (optional feature)
- Folding Hinge Track, Powered if the stair lift rail could cause an obstruction at the foot of the stairs, the final section of the track will fold or unfold automatically as the stair lift ascends or descends the stairs. (optional feature)

- Gearbox contains the gearwheels and holds the stair lift firmly in place wherever it is positioned on the drive rack.

- Hinge Track the end of the track that can be hinged so that it does not obstruct doorways or passageways. (optional feature)
I
- ICCC Charging System exclusive MediTek battery charging system that allows the stair lift to remain on charge regardless of the position on the rail.
- Infra-Red cordless signal used by the remote control to move the stair lift.
- Interlock Switch will not let the stair lift move unless the seat is facing forward.

- Joystick the stick located in the arm rest used for toggle operation

- Key Switch an optional feature on the MediTek stair lift. You can lock the stair lift with a key so that the stair lift cannot be used

- Lifting Capacity the maximum weight the stair lift can safely move
- Linked Footrest the footrest can be joined to the seat so that it is raised at the same time as the seat
- Low Voltage The MediTek Stair Lift uses 24 volts DC to operate. This removes the risk of electric shock

- Over-Speed Detector if the stair lift is moving too quickly, the stair lift is stopped and the motor is disengaged.

- Platform a surface that can be installed to help navigate a short number of steps or bend. See "Bridging Platform"
- Power Seat Swivel see Seat Swivel, Powered
- Pressure-Sensitive Edges edges on the stair lift that prevent the lift from continuing to move should anything obstruct the movement of the stair lift. They are located on all leading edges beneath the stair lift. See Total Surface Protection.

- Rack and Pinion the drive for the MediTek Stair Lift that has no vulnerable ropes or cables.
- Remote Control Operation the stair lift can be operated by means of an infra-red hand-held transmitter.
- Retractable Seatbelt a seatbelt that can be withdrawn so that it does not lay loose when not in use. (optional feature)
- Rocker Switch controls the power to the stair lift. You can prevent inadvertent use of the stair lift by switching the rocker switch to the off position.

- Seat Footrest Link when the seat is folded, the footrest also simultaneously folds.
- Seat Interlock will not let the stair lift move unless the seat is facing forward.
- Seat Swivel, Manual for easier mounting and dismounting, the stair lift seat can swivel 45 or 80 degrees by means of pulling the lever up.
- Seat Swivel, Powered for easier mounting and dismounting, the stair lift seat can swivel 80 degrees by using the toggle switch or remote control when at the top of the stairs.
- Seatbelt a belt that is fastened across the hips to ensure the passenger is safely secured in the seat.
- Sit Down Stair Lift a stair lift that the user sits down in while it is in motion.
- Stair Lift a motorized lift that moves up and down a staircase.
- Stand and Perch Stair Lift a stair lift that can be adjusted so the user either stands or perches while it is in motion.
T
- Toggle Operation MediTek Stair Lifts have a toggle switch in the armrest of your choice for controlling the movement up and down the staircase.
- Total Surface Protection (TSP) monitors all the carriage and footrest leading surfaces so a controlled emergency stop can be activated should an obstruction be encountered.
- Touch Sensitive Safety Covers movement of the covers will result in the suspension of the stair lift when an obstruction is encountered. Part of the Total Surface Protection.
- Trapping Hazards obstructions on the staircase that could get trapped under the stair lift or between the steps and stair lift.
